The True Gift of Recognizing Talent: The Vinnie Potestivo Story

The True Gift of Recognizing Talent: The Vinnie Potestivo Story

Vinnie Potestivo is a media brand advisor, personal brand strategist, and content coach. He is also the host of I Have A Podcast, where he interviews the many incredible people he has had the pleasure of working with over the course of his career to discuss the creative process and more.

Working as an executive and casting director for 20 years at MTV Networks, Vinnie pioneered the way talent and artists claimed control of their narrative by making them hosts, stars, and even producers of their own hit series. To name just a few, Vinnie has worked with incredible talents such as Mandy Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Simpson, Beyoncé Carter, Russell Simmons, Nick Cannon, Lindsay Lohan and so many more. Having launched some of the most successful talent brands in modern pop culture, Vinnie continues to develop talent and talent-led projects and is an active member of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

This Episode’s Heavy-hitter’s:

- Vinnie got his first exposure to production and casting early on at Staten Island Community Television, where he learned his first hard skills editing and piecing shows together.

- He landed his first job at MTV when he met a VJ who was asking bystanders questions for the show. After getting introduced to a casting director, Vinnie got his first opportunity to start casting and helping with production.

- Before working at MTV, Vinnie actually used to build and manage databases for Credit Suisse.

- We talk about Vinnie’s history of going 75% in on taking risks with projects. Vinnie has done this because of how emotionally invested he is in these creative projects, however, he’s grown to feel more comfortable going all in over time.

- When casting for shows, the cast goes through mental evaluations, background checks, and other vetting to make sure they’re able and fit for the shows they’ll appear on.
