This is a special #thePOZcast episode, recorded live, in-person at ONE60 Studios in South Florida in February. This is the third annual show that Joe and Adam have done together in person where they talk about everything happening in the talent industry and life in general. It's always an amazingly insightful conversation between a mentor and his mentee.
Joe Mullings is a career and talent expert and serves as the Chairman & CEO of The Mullings Group Companies. Through The Mullings Group, he’s advised some of the world’s best-known brands– such as Google, Johnson & Johnson, Siemens and Abbott– on how to hire and retain talent. In 2020 he was appointed Chief Visionary Officer of MRI, a Top 3 executive search firm with 400 offices worldwide. Back for the third installation of our now-annual pow-wow, Joe and I as always have a lot to catch up on in the world of work!
This Episode’s Heavy-hitter’s:
- We’re still living with many of the same workplace rules that were made at the very beginning of the pandemic, which is a counterproductive procedure when you consider that we’ve had over two years to re-evaluate and strategize better solutions.
- The blunt truth about performance reviews is that visibility is a huge factor, and so far, remote work seems to receive poorer visibility. This is affecting the new digital divide between those who decide to return to office, and those that continue to work remotely.
- We predict a labor “recalibration” where the dust will settle and some of the candidates who were overpaid due to high demand for talent during the pandemic will leave or be replaced, as the honeymoon period with their employers ends.
- We also talk the art of emotional agility versus empathy, and the pitfalls of unfettered empathy. Emotional agility allows you to be receptive and responsive to people’s emotions– while not being completely dominated by people’s every emotion in a way that could turn manipulative.
- Joe gives us a sneak peak into a new documentary that he’s filming with the Dragonfly Team about the town of Telluride, Colorado. He fell in love with the town and culture there, and now he’s excited to try something new with the folks at Dragonfly Stories.
