Ron Coury: Defining Tenacity: 45 Years in Vegas

Ron Coury is a major business figure in Las Vegas and a former U.S. Marine. Most recently, he wrote Tenacity, a memoir that focuses on the determination necessary to overcome any and all unjust obstacles that may stand in the way of one’s dreams.

As he climbed the ladder of success for 45-years in Las Vegas, he faced a barrage of constraints including political and police corruption, bribery, coercion, and even death threats. As if that wasn’t enough, Ron beat esophageal cancer, which has a particularly daunting survival rate. A man after my own heart, Ron lives and dies by tenacity, something we uncover in this episode.

This Episode’s Heavy-hitters:

When Ron was in college, he fell below the class credit threshold and was going to be drafted into the military while the Vietnam War was going on. He instead opted to go into the Marine Corps, to receive the best training possible to increase his chance of survival.

Ron originally applied to be a Police Officer after leaving the military, but failed the psychological screening because they believed he wouldn’t be able to contain himself, and would instead engage in “street justice.”

In the middle of a trial led by a corrupt official that was trying to convict Ron of a bogus Kidnapping charge, Ron’s terminally ill relative offered to take care of the official the old school, mob-style way. Tempted by the offer, Ron ended up turning it down to deal with it the right way– beating it in court, by the book.

Ron’s more candid definition of tenacity is to know that if you’re going to strive to accomplish something of great significance, you’re going to face obstacles. The key is to embrace them, and most importantly– never back down or cower to bullies.

Luckily, Ron caught his esophageal cancer very early and was able to be one of the very fortunate outliers– just 8% of people that survive that type of cancer.
