In E133 of #thePOZcast, Laurie Ruettimann and I discuss career origins, the changing industry of human resources, and how to know when it’s time for a change in your personal life and career. Staying true to the name of her podcast, Punk Rock HR, Laurie has never followed a traditional path and has always prioritized her autonomy. She describes how she’s been able to maintain that independence even through her time in corporate america, largely by finding a way to connect with people through communicating her story. She’s been blogging, podcasting, and writing for years, and that’s become her true realized passion.
We get into the inspiration behind her latest work, Betting on You, which is a book that she wrote to dissect the mindset that she’s honed and put into action to create a life and career that she’s truly fulfilled by. She reflects a lot in this book and in our conversation about what her corporate gig in HR was doing to her-- leaving her exhausted, eating poorly, and generally just depleted and discontent. After a self-described mental breakdown in the airport, she set her mind on building a more healthy future for herself.
But she didn’t do it all at once. She strategized an exit from her job and entrance into her new career, and spends time detailing how people who are feeling the same way should do so. We talk about the current state of affairs for how people are handling COVID, and how human resources will be changed. We also each give our predictions for how things might not be so different after all, and how people are likely to want to collaborate in person when it’s safe to do so.
