Dr. Paul White: The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace

Dr. Paul White: The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace

Dr. Paul White is a psychologist, speaker, and leadership trainer who "makes work relationships work.” As a speaker and trainer, Dr. White has taught around the world, and his expertise has been requested by major organizations such as Microsoft, NASA, the CDC, ExxonMobil, DIRECTV, L'Oreal, and more.

Dr. White is also the co-author of three books including, “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace,” which has sold over 500,000 copies which he co-wrote alongside NY Times best-selling author Dr. Gary Chapman. Based on their extensive research and expertise, Dr. White and Dr. Chapman have developed practical ways for leaders and employees to communicate authentic appreciation that leads to increased employee engagement, lower staff turnover and more positive work environments.

This Episode’s Heavy-hitters:

Dr. White got his Bachelor’s degree in Christian Education, something that was important to him from his rural upbringing in the midwest. His faith inspired him to want to make a positive change in the world from a young age, which is a central value that he still holds today.

Dr. White breaks down the book business and explains that the major revenue did not come from selling books as much as it did from other affiliate businesses.

In order to be truly empathetic to someone else, Dr. White explains that you need to get to know them enough to understand their perspective.

On writing his book with Dr. Chapman, Dr. White was brought to tears when he read Chapman’s revisions. He felt that he had laid the framework and Dr. Chapman had laid the beautiful finishing touches on the book that would eventually become a best-seller.

“Culture is actually just the aggregate of thousands of individual interactions between people and groups of people… if you want to change culture, you have to change the interactions between people.” Dr. White explains his definition of culture and how to positively change it within an organization.
